Rich climbs a fire tower

On our third day, an 81-mile ride up the Paul Bunyan Trail from Brainerd to Walker, Rich decided to find a few geocaches. One of them was near this old fire tower a mile east of Pequot Lakes, Minn. History has it that a black bear climbed the tower many years ago, scaring the heck out of a ranger who later made his way up to the top. They coaxed the bear back down by using marshmallows! Anyway, before finding the geocache, Rich climbed up the tower to take a look ...

... and found this lovely view of Pequot Lakes.
It was a windy day, so standing atop the fire tower was pretty shaky! Rich made this face again after reading the sign in the parking area that stated the tower was built in 1934. Seventy-four years ago! No wonder those gusset plates looked so rusty!

The view going back down the steps. There were 105 of them, I believe.
